What is a puff-back?
This occurs when smoke and soot are forced back into your home due to a blockage or issue with your fireplace or furnace. Puff-backs can be caused by a number of issues, including:
- Chimney obstructions: Branches, birds’ nests, balls, or wasp nests can restrict airflow and cause smoke to build up in the flue pipe.
- Creosote buildup: Flammable substance that forms in chimneys and stove pipes when smoke doesn’t fully escape. It is a byproduct of burning wood and other fossil fuels.
- Lack of air supply: Negative air pressure within the home can occur when a home is very tightly insulated. Try to crack a window before lighting fire to ensure proper air flow.
- Poorly installed chimney: A chimney that’s too short may not allow enough draft to be drawn up and out.
- Unsuitable firewood: Wet or green wood can produce more smoke than seasoned wood.
- Mechanical failure: Mechanical issues can cause puffbacks.
- Improper maintenance: A lack of maintenance can lead to puffbacks.
Puff-backs can cause:
- Soot to coat your walls, furniture, and personal items
- Respiratory issues, especially for people with asthma or other lung conditions
- Long-term damage to fabrics and carpeting
To prevent puff-backs, you can:
- Hire a chimney sweep to inspect and clean your chimney annually
- Use seasoned wood
